A modelling approach in exploring dry (Rabi) season cropping options with subsistence farmers in India’s West Bengal region

[摘要] This report documents activity undertaken using a modelling approach to explore cropping options with subsistence farmers as part of an ACIAR project LWR/2002/100, Water harvesting and better cropping systems for smallholders of the East India Plateau. Farming systems in West Bengal are generally smallholder farmers growing kharif rice, but with little dry season (rabi) cropping, on sloping lands which provide variable soil and water resource challenges at different points on the hills and valleys. The questions being asked are; how to improve the agronomy of the wet season rice, and how to introduce rabi crops (initially mustard and wheat) into a traditionally continuous rice cropping system. This work builds and extends concurrent ACIAR activities in Bangladesh (SMCN/2005/146) in exploring rabi season cropping.
