Direct Conservation Actions for Critical Endangered Spotted Handfish

[摘要] In 2015, for the first time, all known sub-populations of spotted handfish (Brachionichthys hirsutus) in the Derwent Estuary and D’Entrecasteaux Channel were surveyed in a single season. These surveys provide a pilot for the start of a baseline dataset for long-term monitoring (Wong, 2015). We found fish present at all 9 Derwent Estuary sub-population sites and at one of the two D’Entrecasteaux Channel sites, observing a total of 80 fish (70 adults and 10 juveniles).In addition to this ‘whole of known population’ survey, historic data from previous studies across the Derwent were also consolidated.When data was compared across time no obvious inter-annual patterns were apparent at a meta-population scale between the Derwent sub-populations, but at 3 of these sites there were declines in fish densities and at one site an increase (Fig 1).
