Nutrient and DOC Removal from Ellen Brook Waters: Evaluation of Mining By-Products
[摘要] Extensive changes in land use including urbanisation and intensive agriculture have resulted in the accumulation of a substantial inventory of nutrients within the Swan-Canning catchment. Effective removal of nutrients and other contaminants such as trace metals and pathogens from the catchment is essential to effective long-term management of the Swan-Canning river system and the adjoining estuary. A previous investigation of best management practices for the removal of high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), organic nitrogen and dissolved phosphorous from typical surface waters of the Swan Coastal Plain indicated that some mineral-based materials may provide an effective low-cost option for nutrient and DOC attenuation (Wendling et al., 2009a). In the present study, the most promising of the mineral-based materials identified in previous work were further examined in long-term large-scale column trials using water from Ellen Brook, which is a significant source of nutrient and DOC input to the Swan Canning river system. This report describes results from more than one year of column operation.
