A wind tunnel investigation into the aerodynamic effect of forest clearings on the nesting of Abbott's Booby on Christmas Island: Progress report on a study commissioned by the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service

The work was motivated by the observed nesting patterns of the Abbott's Booby on Christmas Island: the birds avoid regions downwind of forest clearings. Our aim in this short (three-month) study was to demonstrate that this pattern is related to the wind flow around clearings, and to identify which flow features are responsible. This was achieved. We did not have time to undertake detailed work on possible strategies to ameliorate the problem, nor were we asked to doso at this stage.
