Investigation of Mineral-Based By-Product Reuse for the Removal of Nutrients and DOC from Swan Coastal Plain Surface waters
[摘要] Extensive changes in land use including urbanisation and intensive agriculture have resulted in a substantial inventory of nutrients within the Swan-Canning catchment. Effective removal of nutrients and other contaminants such as trace metals is essential to effective long-term management of the Swan-Canning river system and estuary. A previous investigation of best management practices for the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), organic nitrogen and dissolved phosphorous from typical surface waters of the Swan Coastal Plain indicated that some mineral-based materials may provide an effective, low-cost option (Wendling et al., 2009a). In the present study, the most promising of the mineral-based materials identified in previous work were further examined in long-term, column trials using Ellen Brook water, which is a significant source of nutrient and DOC into the Swan-Canning river system. This report describes results from over one year of column operation.
