THE EVALUATION OF NYSTATIN ON THE COURSE OF COCCIDIOIDOMYCOSIS IN MICE

[摘要] Nystatin is fungicidal in vitro against Coccidioides immitis in concns. of 6.25 [mu]g./ml. and has an inhibitory effect in concns. as low as 1.56 [mu]g./ml. Nystatin may be administered daily intraperitoneally to mice in doses as great as 20 mg./kg. over a long period of time with little evidence of toxicity. The course of coccidioidomycosis is significantly altered in mice treated with Nystatin under the conditions of the expts. There is clinical, gross, and microscopic evidence as well as cultural evidence to indicate that in vivo Nystatin is fungicidal as well as fungistatic against C. immitis. Nystatin is deserving of further investigation regarding its use for treatment of coccidioidomycosis.
