HORNY LAYER LIPIDS .2. FURTHER STUDIES ON OVERALL CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF LIPIDS FROM NORMAL AND PATHOLOGICAL HUMAN STRATUM CORNEUM

[摘要] Improved analytical and extraction techniques were used to study the lipid substances from horny layers only by prolonged extraction with polar solvents. The horny layer lipids from both normal and pathological materials were examined and some differences were observed both between the normal and pathological materials as well as among the disease conditions themselves. The significance of these variations is discussed. Polar sterol containing substances have been demonstrated in all horny layer lipid specimens. These compounds show -narked variations between the normals and the various disease conditions. The possible role of these substances in the normal metabolism of the horny layer is discussed. The specific biological role of horny layer lipids is not known. However, these substances may be involved in the water-barrier function of the epidermis.
