STUDIES OF RADIOACTIVE PHOSPHORUS P-32 APPLIED TO HUMAN SKIN .1. ERYTHEMA AND AUTORADIOGRAPHIC FINDINGS FOLLOWING APPLICATIONS IN VARIOUS FORMS
[摘要] Experiments were done to ascertain whether differences in clinical biologic effects, as judged by erythema, result from the topical application of radioactive P32 to human skin in vivo as an aqueous solution, in the form of blotting paper discs or in specially constructed sealed plaques. In one series penetration and localization of P32 applied in aqueous solution or blotting paper discs was shown by auto-radiography of tissue sections prepared from biopsy specimens. In either application there is no correlation between the erythema-tous response observed and the amount of P32 found on the skin surface or within the tissues. When P32 is applied to the surface of the skin simultaneously as an aqueous solution, in the form of a blotting paper disc and in a sealed plaque, no regular difference in biologic effect, as judged by erythema, is observed between the 3 methods. These studies indicate that P32 produces essentially the same erythema in human skin whether it acts from the surface or after penetration into the tissues. These findings with a pure beta emitter differ from similar earlier studies with thorium X (primarily an alpha emitter) in which the penetration of the thorium X into the tissue definitely enhances the erythematous response.
