GEOMETRIC RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE MATRIX OF THE HAIR BULB AND ITS DERMAL PAPILLA IN NORMAL AND ALOPECIC SCALP

[摘要] From histological specimens of normal scalp and affected and unaffected alopecic scalp, measurements were made of the volume of the matrix, number of mitotic cells in the matrix, the volume of the dermal papilla, and the number of cells in the papilla. The volume of the matrix was approximately 10 times the volume of the papilla in normal scalp, and the number of cells in the dermal papilla was approximately 9 times the mitotic cells in the matrix of normal scalp. In early male baldness there was a reduction in the size of the matrix and the papilla; however the ratio of matrix to papilla was about the same as in normal scalp. In alopecia areata both the matrix and papilla were reduced in size; however the matrix was reduced in size more than the papilla.
