MYCOTICIN, A NEW ANTIFUNGAL ANTIBIOTIC .1. PRELIMINARY PAPER

[摘要] A new antifungal antibiotic was isolated in crystalline form from Streptomyces ruber. The antibiotic, mycoticin, is particularly active in vitro against C. immitis, H. capsulatum, B. derma-titidis, S. schenckii and M. audouini. The antibiotic, which has a probable chemical formula of C18H35O5, has several interesting features including ability to fluoresce under UV, a property that can be roughly correlated with activity. The crystalline material rapidly becomes inactivated unless stored in vacuo. A fairly accurate estimation of antifungal activity can be determined by UV spectrum. Toxicity is quite high the approximate LD50 being between 10-20 mg/kg body weight when administered intraperitoneally to mice. Hemolysis was not evident in the autopsied animals.
