STUDIES OF COMMON BALDNESS OF STUMPTAILED MACAQUE .I. DISTRIBUTION OF HAIR FOLLICLES
[摘要] Trichograms were made of various areas of bald and nonbald scalps of stumptailed macaques (Macaca speciosa). Within any one region of the scalp the density of the hair follicles was almost identical between young nonbald and adult bald animals. The bald forehead was populated mostly by telogen follicles and a few short vellus anagen follicles, while the hairy parietal area had mostly terminal anagen follicles. During the phenomenon of baldness the number of hair follicles does not decrease but the follicles become transformed from terminal to vellus types and remain largely quiescent. The vellus follicle as seen elsewhere in the body and the transformed vellus follicles in bald areas may be distinguished by the presence of arrector pili muscle, either still attached at their base or lying free somewhere in the vicinity. This is in agreement with previous investigations on human baldness.
