ICMI Column – Jean-Pierre Kahane (1926– 2017): His legacy to mathematics education
[摘要] On 21 June 2017, the mathematical community suffereda great loss with the death ofJean-Pierre Kahane at the ageof 90. He was a student at theEcole Normale Supérieure(ENS), defended his doctorate under the supervision ofMandelbrojt in 1954 and wasappointed as Maitre de Conférences (1954–57) the sameyear and then professor (until1961) at the University ofMontpellier, before getting aposition in Orsay (UniversityParis Sud), where he pursuedhis career until he retired in1994, remaining as a professor emeritus until his death.He was a world-renowned specialist in harmonicanalysis, chaos theory and Brownian movement, andwon several prizes: Peccot (1957), Maurice Audin (1960),Carrière de mathématiques (1964), Servant (1972), GrandPrix d’Etat des Sciences Mathématiques et Physiques(1980) and Médaille Emile Picard (1995). He was nominated at the French Académie des Sciences in 1988 andwas made Grand-officier de la Légion d’honneur, Chevalier de l’ordre national du mérite and Commandeur despalmes académiques.
