Substantial reduction of basal cell carcinoma tumor size with itraconazole following treatment failure with intralesional 5-fluorouracil
[摘要] Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most commonnonmelanoma skin cancer in humans. The pivotalabnormality in all BCCs is associated withmalignant activation of the sonic hedgehog (SHH)signaling pathway [1].Itraconazole, though primarily an antifungal drug, hasbeen found to be useful in the treatment of BCC. Itsrole in BCC has been linked to its potent antagonisticactivity against the SHH pathway, thereby facilitatingreduction in tumor size and proliferation [2].Furthermore, it has been reported that itraconazolecan reduce the SHH pathway by 65% after 1 month oftherapy [3].
