Obituary: Professor Taijiro Uchida
[摘要] Professor Taijiro Uchida, who was a member of the Nuclear Fusion Editorial Board in the1970’s, has passed away on 24th of March 2016 at the age of 87, due to heart failure. Aftergraduating from the University of Tokyo and spending some years in industry, he joinedfusion research when the first research group on plasma physics was established in NihonUniversity. He then moved to the Institute of Plasma Physics (IPP), Nagoya University,where he constructed the Caulked-Cusp Torus (CCT) and gave an experimental proof of theaverage minimum-B confinement [1], see also [2]. He returned to the University of Tokyoas a professor in 1973, and fostered many fusion scientists including the late Professor NInoue, former chairman of fusion council under the Atomic Energy Commission of Japan,and myself. Professor Uchida also played a key role in fusion research promotion in Japanas a science advisor to the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.
