In memoriam: W. Gerald Austen (1930-2022)

[摘要] On September 11, 2022, our specialty lost one of its most remarkably effective leaders in William Gerald Austin, MD, 69th president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS). He preferred to go by Jerry but was known by many, including his children, as “WGA.” To the residents at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), he was “The Supreme Commander,” reflecting the understanding that he was without a doubt the most quietly powerful figure in the institution.
