Commentary: The next step forward for enhanced recovery after surgery: Postdischarge benefits

[摘要] Over the past 20 years, postsurgical care has undergone considerable transformation. During my time as a thoracic fellow, there were as many postoperative lobectomy “care pathways” as there were surgeons. There were considerable differences in the number of chest tubes and their management, intravenous fluid management, and use of multimodal pain medications. The only consistent item was an epidural. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) concepts and pathways have driven change the last 8 to 10 years in not only standardized postoperative care based on evidence but also reduced complications and length of stay.
