Trends in Clinico-pathological and Risk Factor Profile of Breast Cancer; 10-year Experience at a Single Center in Sri Lanka
[摘要] Background The incidence of breast cancer in Sri Lanka isincreasing on par with the rest of Asia.Lifestyle changes increasing the prevalence ofrisk factors of breast cancer among Asianwomen are claimed to be one of the reasonsfor this trend.AimTo analyze the clinico-pathological and riskfactor profile of a cohort of breast cancerpatients to detect any change in the patterns, over time.MethodAll breast cancer patients whose hormonereceptor and Her2 status were evaluated inour laboratory from 2006 to 2015 wereincluded. Clinicopathological data wasretrieved from the laboratory records. A pretested interviewer administeredquestionnaire was used to collect data on riskfactors.ResultsA total of 1371 patients were included. Therewas a significant change in trend in the age(p=0.001) with an upturn in the breast cancerpatients over 60 years of age. A significant change in trend was alsoobserved in TNM stage (p=0.002), tumoursize, Nottingham grade and lympho-vascularinvasion (p<0.001). Hormone receptorexpression showed an upward trend towardsthe latter part of the decade (p<0.001). Aparallel decline in the triple negative cancerswas also noted (p<0.001). However, Her2status, lymph node metastases and lymphnode stage did not show a change in trend. The only risk factor with a significant changewas family history of breast cancer which hada downward trend (p=0.002).ConclusionThis study describes an upward shift in thehormone receptor expression which can beattributed to the upward trend in thepercentage of patients of >60 years. Nosignificant change in trend in the risk factorprofile was observed except for thedownward trend in family history of breastcancer.
