Tracing the Progress of Pathology in Sri Lanka – Part II: Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Pathology
[摘要] This is the second of the three-part seriesdocumenting the birth and evolution ofPathology in Sri Lanka (Part one was publishedin the previous issue of this volume). In thispart the development of postgraduateteaching in pathology is addressed.Dr. S.A Cabraal, the first Director of the PostGraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM),University of Colombo, writing in the Journal ofPathology on postgraduate training in Sri Lankastates, that “prior to the establishment of thePGIM in 1974, the University of Colomboconferred the Degree of Doctor of Medicine inPathology on candidates who had passed suchexaminations or submitted material asprescribed by the then regulation”. Since therewas no organized teaching or training takingplace in the island at that time, the training wasdone in the UK and the postgraduate Diplomaof The Royal College of Pathologists was arecognized qualification for consultantappointments.
