Pulp fiction, resilience, or something else?
[摘要] I don’t know what it was in the end, butsomething in me just snapped.I needed a fix, although I wasn’t reallysure what was broken; I wasn’t really sureof much any more. It had all seemed so clearin the beginning: use the science to helppeople, to look after them. After 20 years,it felt as if something had gone wrong, andthings were about as clear as the row ofurine samples on my desk; somehow, theones wrapped in plastic bags always botherme.A lot of things bother me these days: theletters from specialists I’ve never heard of,patients I’ve never seen before asking meto prescribe drugs I can’t even pronounce;the GANFYDs* that don’t even seem weirdany more because I’ve seen them all before. Most of all, though, it’s the feeling that I’mjust the monkey turning the handle on theorgan, hoping that it won’t fall off. I’m notsure that’s what the monkey’s meant to do,but the organ grinder went home long ago.
