Time to replace the spherical equivalent with the average paraxial lens power
[摘要] A scalar measure of refractive power isfrequently used to evaluated refractiveoutcomes. Such scalar measures are based onthe average power of a lens or lens system, forexample, spherocylinder.A commonly used measure has been themean spherical equivalent usually referredto as the spherical equivalent (SE). Harrisrecognised, however, that there may beother scalar terms for the SE.1 As such, it hasrecently been shown that the ApP, which inaddition to orthogonal rays, includes theaverage or mean of oblique paraxial rays.It is also associated with better visual acuitythan the SE and therefore may be of moreclinical use.2 The relationship between theApP and SE, however, needs clarification.
