Holding back the tears: does marsupialisation of a remnant canaliculus after tumour resection help eliminate epiphora?
[摘要] Basal cell carcinoma, the most common periocular malignancy, most commonly affects thelower eyelid and medial canthus and mayinvolve the lower canaliculus.1 Managementposes several surgical challenges due to thevicinity’s intricate and complex anatomy.2Sacrifice of a part of the proximal lacrimaldrainage system is not uncommon when themedial portions of the eyelids are involved.Based on a retrospective review of 22 eyes,Chiu et al posit that marsupialisation of theremnant canaliculus after losing part of theproximal lower canaliculus will help preventpostoperative epiphora.3 We have all longfaced this problem with what to do with theinjured canaliculus and, to date, none of ushas the answer. So it behoves us to considerthis study and review its conclusions critically.
