[摘要] Bryological research on the Indian subcontinent has a longtradition, dating back to the 1780s, although in Indianbryophyte literature (e.g., Gangulee 1969; Chopra 1975;Dabhade 1998; Nair et al. 2005; Aziz & Vohra 2008;Chaudhary et al. 2008; Daniels & Daniel 2013; SandhyaRani et al. 2014) Scottish physician Francis BuchananHamilton (1762‒1829) is considered a pioneer collector ofmosses in this region. In the years 1802‒1803 he collectedsome mosses in Nepal before he became the Superitendentof the Shibpur East India Company Botanical Garden. Hiscollection was examined by W. J. Hooker (1808), whorecorded 17 species from Nepal, including ten new to science. They were published in his well known paper Muscinepalenses, which is considered by the above-mentionedIndian bryologists to be the first bryological publicationfrom the Indian subcontinent.
