Increasing clinical attendance among adolescents and young adults: a simple and novel method

[摘要] Transition clinics have been introduced as away to address the needs of adolescents andyoung adults (AYA) with a chronic condition requiring ongoing care.1 Poor clinicalattendance in this population due to social,economic and personal issues are known,however solutions to address this have beenlimited.2 3 Miscommunication and forgetfulness were cited as some of the reasons formissed appointments.4 5Studies have shown using short messageservice (SMS), also known as text messages, toremind patients of clinical appointments canreduce missed appointments and improveyoung patients’ engagement in the management of their chronic disease.4 6 7 Howeverfurther high quality research is required inAYA to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of SMS reminders.4The primary objective of this study wasto determine the effect of SMS appointment reminders to patients on uninformedno-show rates. The secondary objective of thisstudy was patient satisfaction with the use ofSMS communication.
