Metabolic adaptation in lactation: Insulin-dependent and -independent glycemic control
[摘要] The metabolic syndrome including type2 diabetes is associated with aberrantmetabolism of glucose and lipid, thatis, impaired metabolic flexibility. Propermetabolic adaptation is critical formammals to survive conditions withrestricted caloric intake, such as starvation. However, one process that exemplifies theamazing capacity of metabolic flexibilityin mammals is lactation, an exquisitemetabolic adaptation process that normallyis not associated with restricted caloricintake. Instead of an exchange of energysource between carbohydrate and lipid, lactation is associated with mobilizationof both glucose and fat from storage formilk production. A rewiring of inter-organmetabolic flux is induced during lactation, which has significant health impacts onboth mothers and babies.
