A Prospective Observational Study On Pattern Of Drug Use For Neuropathic Pain In A Tertiary Hospital.
[摘要] Neuropathic pain (NP) is a chronic condition caused by damage or disease affecting thesomatosensory nervous system and may be associated with abnormal sensations or pain from normallynon-painful stimuli. It is usually associated with impaired quality of life (QoL) which can potentiallyprogress to a stage in which the patient is physically and psychologically distressed and also, the globalburden of the disease conditions attributable to neuropathic pain are increasing over the past decade forreasons unknown. This study was conducted to determine the prescribing pattern for neuropathic painand to assess the improvement and tolerability of the prescribed medications in neuropathic pain.100consecutive subjects of either gender aged 18-65 years with newly diagnosed neuropathic pain, whoattended Pain Super Specialty Outpatient Department at KIMS Hospital and Research Centre, Bangalorewere assessed for the pattern of drugs prescribed and improvement of pain and overall health wasestimated by using Short-Form McGILL Pain Questionnaire. The mean age group of study subjects was44.68 years, majority of which, were between 31-50 years with more preponderance among malest subjects. The response to combination therapy with 1 line drugs were better when compared tomonotherapy in effectively managing all the dimensions of pain. The response to NP was higher insubjects with younger age group, good socio-economic status, familial support, good awareness andfunctional status, regular follow-up visits. Poor response was related to advancing age, lack offamily/social support, multiple illnesses and medications and adverse effects.
