Justice and equality as a zero-sum game

[摘要] All social science research contains worldviews.Society is diagnosed as being in a state ofneeding attention and action. Different ways ofapproaching societal issues inevitably carrystrengths and weaknesses, and in the worst case,researchers become trained into a tunnel visionwhere they cannot see how things are connected.In the past 20 years, social epidemiology hasrisen to become a hugely popular and importantarea of research. The very designation makes itspopularity easy to understand: The idea is thatin the same way that you can follow diseasesand health in populations, you can follow thesocially determined circumstances that makesome more inclined to have certain kinds of(health-related) concerns. A classic examplefrom alcohol research is that people with highersocioeconomic status have less negative consequences of alcohol use. This notion is bound tochallenge our view of health-related justice.
