Sleep scoring moving from visual scoring towards automated scoring
[摘要] For many years we have been using visual sleep scoring toquantify sleep stages and all events occurring during sleep. This required a long path with initial standardization of rulesfor visual sleep staging starting with the sleep of healthy youngvolunteers and continuing with all the sleep abnormalities weknow today. Currently, rules for sleep staging are laid out in theAASM manual version 2.6 which provides definitions for sleepstages and the most commonly observed events related to thesleep disorders with the highest prevalence [1]. We recognizethe high variability in sleep scoring results achieved by expertsleep scorers [2, 3]. Visual sleep scoring is still, however, a veryvalid task because we may observe unexpected events duringsleep and this teaches us much about the abnormalities observed during sleep. Visual sleep scoring is also very importantfor newcomers to the field of sleep medicine, so that they learnand understand how sleep changes across the night, how muchsleep varies from person to person, and how to identify unusualand abnormal events during sleep.
