Personalizing guideline-driven cancer screening
[摘要] Reports of cancer date back thousands ofyears to Egyptian texts. Its existence baffl ed scientists until the 1950s, when Watson,Crick, and Franklin discovered the structureof DNA, laying the groundwork for identifying the genetic pathways leading to cancer.Currently, cancer is a leading global cause ofdeath and the second leading cause of deathin the United States.1,2 In an effort to curtail cancer and its related morbidity and mortality, population-basedscreening programs have been implementedwith tests that identify precancerous lesionsand, preferably, early-stage rather than latestage cancer. Screening for cancer can lead to early diagnosis and prevent death from cancer, but thetopic continues to provoke controversy.
