Beyond heart health: Consequences of obstructive sleep apnea
[摘要] Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious conditionassociated with impaired quality of life, depression, drowsy driving and motor vehicle accidents, metabolicdisease, and cognitive decline. The mechanisms accounting for OSA and metabolic disease include hypoxia, sleep fragmentation, and systemic infl ammation. OSAappears to advance cognitive decline, and the relationshipbetween the 2 conditions may be bidirectional. Treatmentof patients with continuous positive air pressure therapyimproves many of the impaired outcomes associated withOSA. Greater awareness, screening, and treatment ofpatients with OSA can reduce the negative consequencesassociated with OSA.
