Norwegian scabies
[摘要] A bedridden 78-year-old man with advanced dementia was transported to thedermatology outpatient department with arash and intense itching over the entire bodyfrom the feet to the scalp. His medical historyincluded diabetes mellitus, hypertension, andAlzheimer dementia. He had no history of allergies. His vital signs were normal. Physical examination noted widespread crusted hyperkeratotic lesions on the trunk, arms, and hands(Figure 1). A potassium hydroxide mountof scrapings of the lesions revealed extensiveinfestation with Sarcoptes scabiei,1 with a veryhigh number of eggs and fecal pellets (Figure 2). This fi nding led to a diagnosis of crusted orNorwegian scabies, an extremely contagiousform of scabies seen in immunocompromised, malnourished, and bedridden elderly or institutionalized patients.
