Video intervention to improve incident reporting among medical trainees
[摘要] Introduction/objective Improving graduate medicaltrainee involvement with patient safety and incidentreporting is an important task in teaching hospitalsthat has been recognised across the country and led tonumerous efforts to address barriers to incident reporting.A variety of studies have started to define the reasonswhy trainees are not optimally involved and interventionsthat may be helpful. The present study aims to add tothis literature by primarily addressing barriers that canbe considered ‘non-technical’ such as fears surroundingpotential professional repercussions after submitting areport, perceptions that reporting incidents is not useful,and concerns about anonymity.Methods Barriers to incident reporting were previouslyanalysed at our institution. A video was producedto directly target the barriers discovered. A 2-houreducational session was delivered which includedthe video intervention. The educational session waspart of the standard patient safety curriculum at ourinstitution. Paper surveys were used to capture changesin perceived barriers to incident reporting. Baseline andpostintervention surveys were analysed for changes usingt-tests and a p value of <0.05 to determine significance.Survey development included literature review, patientsafety expert discussion and cognitive interviews.Results Perceived knowledge about the reporting processsignificantly improved after the intervention (t=−4.49;p<0.05). Attitudes about reporting also significantlyimproved with reduction in fear of negative consequencesand anonymity. Perceptions of reporting being a futileactivity were also diminished after the intervention.Conclusions This study demonstrates that targetingnon-technical barriers to incident reporting with a videointervention is an effective way to improve perceivedknowledge and attitude about incident reporting.
