The Relationship between Facial Index and Smile Features in People Aged 20-35 in Ahvaz
[摘要] Background and Objectives A smile is one of the most attractive features of everybody. To understandbetter the effect of facial patterns on smile attractiveness, we conducted this study and determined therelationship between the facial index and 3 characteristics of a smile, i.e., gingival display, dental show,and smile index in 20-35 years olds people living in Ahvaz City, Iran, in 2020.Subjects and Methods The present study was an analytical epidemiological study. The study's statisticalpopulation included 96 people (48 women and 48 men). The study data were collected using 2photographs of frontal view and a close-up smile. Using the AutoCAD program, the amount of dentalshow, gingival display, facial height, facial width, smile width, and distance between lips were measured,and their relationships with facial and smile indices were evaluated. Descriptive and analytical (the Chisquaretest, paired t test, and ANOVA) statistical tests were used to analyze the data (P<0.05).Results The facial pattern in men was significantly more than in regular face (P<0.001). Regarding gingivaldisplay and dental show, the effect of facial index and gender was significant (P<0.001). Regarding thesmile index, the effect of gender was not significant, but the effect of the facial index was significant(P<0.001).Conclusion According to the results, the facial index impacts all influential factors of the smile. Therefore,it is necessary to pay extra attention to this index in treatment planning and mechanics of orthodonticsto obtain a more attractive smile and gain patient satisfaction.
