Conclave kindles hope for bioethical reform

[摘要] The death of Pope John Paul II has brought to light the position of the Roman Catholic Church regarding contraception. Although one of the most science-friendly popes he always stood by his predecessors views regarding contraception and therefore had an ultraconservative stance on the use of condoms. During hispontificate the AIDS pandemic began. This however did not change his view on the use of contraception. The electing conclave in the Vatican will also have to deliberate will this new leader create scope for change regarding these issues.
