[摘要] The marine biologist, Cindy Lee Van Dover, studies the mysteries of the deep in a deep-sea submersible and collects information about species that survive in hostile conditions such as hydrothermal vents. An example of such a species is the shrimp, Rimicaris exoculata, that has highly modified eyes for light sensing. Her extensive studies of life on hydrothermal vents has proven that some organisms use photosynthesis in the absence of light to survive. A discoverythat could have very significant consequences for astrobiologists.
