[摘要] The implantation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) into a patient is a way of automatically restarting a failing heart. They provide a lifesaver to people with a risk of heart failure. In the past seven years, the use of ICDs has increased fivefold. Doubts have been raised about the number of ICDs in use and independent trials are needed. As well as the cost of these devices, there is a risk of electrical failure. No figures are available on the incidence of failure. The risks and benefits need to be adequately assessed.
