The Ministry of J.H.Jowett at Carrs Lane Congregational Church, Birmingham, 1896-1911
[摘要] John Henry Jowett (1864- 1923) was a Nonconformist minister who was appointed to the pastorate of Carrs Lane Congregational Church, Birmingham in 1896 following the death of their eminent leader R.W.Dale. Not only was he faced with the challenge of taking over from a high profile minister, but also had the most difficult task of accommodating the needs of his congregation to the rapidly changing world of the early twentieth century. This study aims to show a comprehensive understanding of his views and how he approached the difficulties that confronted him by looking at the sermons and addresses he gave whilst at CaiTS Lane. This is a personal evaluation, although it will reveal the contribution he made to the Church by his management and social skills. More significantly his rhetorical skills were seen to establish him as a so-called 'Pulpit Prince'. He was able to extend his work on the wider national scene through his involvement with the Congregational Union and the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches. Yet it was his simple faith in the Grace of God which he translated into practical Christianity that ensured the continuing reputation of Carrs lane during his time there.
