The stages of celebrity

[摘要] The Stages of Celebrity investigates the phenomenon of the birth of what we might now recognize as modern celebrity and its beginnings in the eighteenth century using the career and critical afterlife of David Garrick as its central case-study. Celebrity and the critical responses to Garrick’s posthumous celebrity in print during a period between 1779-1832 are considered, using an early critical response to David Garrick shortly after his death, Thomas Davies’ Memoirs of the Life of David Garrick (1780), and a later critical response in the first third of the nineteenth-century using James Boaden’s The Private Correspondence of David Garrick (1831-2) and responding to modern critical scholarship, to track the changes and developments to Garrick in the critical afterlife and also the stability of a life such as Garrick’s in print.
