La funzione del dialetto nella creazione di identità nazionali. il caso della Lombardia e della Padania nella stampa leghista (1984-2009)

[摘要] This thesis focuses on the Northern League (Lega Nord, LN) and its predecessor, the Lombard League (Lega Lombarda, LL). It analyses one of the most crucial aspect of these two political movements, that is the extent to which they deployed Northern Italian dialects in the construction of ethnic-national identities. By relaying on a large corpus of data never systematically analysed before which covers the 1984- 2009 period, the work challenges much of the received wisdom on how the LN/LL used dialect throughout their history. The research will argue that, while Bossi’s parties did make much use of dialect to portray the party as being close to ‘the people’ and against ‘the elites’, and did in some ways break with the Italian tradition of political communication, they never systematically ‘activate’ dialect to create ethnic-national identities as it has been claimed in the literature.
