I and the village: critical essay

[摘要] I and the Village is a double portrait. Its subjects are Aimee, a teenage rebel with a cause and her religious conservative hometown of Van Vechten, Michigan. As the town struggles to come to terms with a shooting in St. Bart’s Episcopal Church, Aimee makes the journey from petty criminal to assassin. Leading an investigation into the shooting is Manda Hoffman, a playwright who plans to transcribe her interviews with the townspeople into a work for the stage. She doggedly pursues her object, surmounting resistance and suspicion to unearth the town’s ‘true’ attitudes and prejudices. Meanwhile, Aimee becomes further and further isolated from society after she is placed under house arrest for vandalism and tethered to her mother, Robin. Desperate for a break, Robin decides to attend a behaviour management conference on Mackinac Island, leaving Randy, her lover, to step in as chaperone. In the ensuing week, he takes Aimee sailing, teaches her how to shoot a rifle, and helps to ease rejection by her absentee father, Hank. But when their relationship sours, Aimee makes her private grief a public event.
