Direct laser fabrication of Ti-5553
[摘要] This research report studies the possibility of manufacturing DLF structures and whether the mechanical properties are comparable to the parent material. The research is divided into two stages: Principals of DLF and Improvement of mechanical properties. The first stage of the research explains the DLF process for Ti-5553, and investigates the processing parameters which would affect the quality of the fabricated structures and concludes that laser power, Powder feed rate and scanning speed are the 3 major processing parameters that would influence the integrity and the quality of the deposition. The research then reviews the effect of each parameter in relationship to the other parameters. The results showed that below a minimum laser power, there is no coherence between the deposition and the substrate. The relationship between the scan rate, powder feed rate and the height of build for fixed laser power levels is also investigated and tabulated. The research concentrates on Prep® powder and does not investigate the gas atomized powders. Using Prep® powder, no porosity was witnessed through the microsections. The mechanical properties of DLF samples were analyzed in as-deposit condition and found to be unsatisfactorily and further heat treatment cycles are necessary to improve the mechanical properties of the deposition.
