Exploring women's experiences of a Trauma Recovery EmpowermentModel (TREM) group intervention

[摘要] The first chapter is a systematic literature review examining group interventions for trauma and substance misuse, available for women in the criminal justice system. Thirteen papers are reviewed and assessed against a quality framework. Four interventions were identified for use with this population group. There was no evidence to suggest that the interventions worsened symptoms of trauma or substance misuse. The papers adopted different research designs and utilised different outcome measures to assess effectiveness. Findings indicated that future research should adopt standardised assessment measures, blind researchers to reduce bias, and implement randomised controlled trial designs in order to produce more robust findings. The second chapter is a qualitative research paper exploring women’s experiences of a Trauma Recovery Empowerment Model (TREM) group intervention. Individual semi-structured interviews were carried out with four clients who had attended the intervention and two group facilitators. The client data were analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. The themes identified from this analysis were used as a priori themes, for Template Analysis then applied to the facilitators’ data. Three themes were identified (1) the group as a community, (2) self as important and (3) relationship with trauma. Analysis revealed considerable overlap between clients’ and staffs’ accounts of TREM. The findings reflect the assumptions of the TREM intervention as detailed by its author (Harris, 1998). They are also consistent with previous trauma studies, highlighting the importance of a validating environment, fostering connections with others and providing a sense of empowerment. Volume 2 - Forensic Clinical Practice Reports Four Forensic Clinical Practice Reports (FCPRs) are presented and an abstract of an oral presentation. FCPR one formulates the difficulties of Edward, an inpatient detained under sections 47/49 of the Mental Health Act (1983), from a cognitive behavioural and systemic perspective. FCPR two describes a service evaluation, assessing how inpatients viewed the Community Meetings held on two medium secure units. FCPR three details a case study of Jason, who was referred to a community child and adolescent learning disability service. He had a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) and difficulties with anxiety. The assessment, formulation, intervention and evaluation are described from a cognitive behavioural perspective. FCPR four describes a single case experimental design of Eileen, an older adult experiencing symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder. The assessment, formulation, intervention and evaluation are described from a cognitive behavioural perspective. FCPR five summarises the case of Kathy, who attended a personality disorder treatment service within a female prison. The assessment, formulation, intervention and evaluation are described from a cognitive behavioural perspective.
