Second sound attenuation in a liquid helium counterflow jet
[摘要] The attenuation of a beam of high frequency second sound traversing a counterflow jet in liquid helium has been measured in the temperature range 1.6 to 2.06°K. Combined use of thin film superconducting thermometers with specially developed low noise amplifiers allowed a temperature resolution of better than one part in 10^8 °K. The additional attenuation due to the jet was found to be less than 10 percent of the predicted value using the theory of mutual friction in a supercritical counterflow, and consistent with the result of earlier temperature gradient and ion beam attenuation measurements.
