The morphological changes factors in Kotagede fringe areas
[摘要] The growth and development of the city takes place through a continuous process of urbanization. This process creates inverted urban growth where urbanization initially took place in the urban core, but in the last decades it has spreade to the fringe and border areas. The settlement growth phenomenon to the fringe areas also occurred in historic cities, and it changes the characteristics of the cities. Historic cities should maintain their ancient configuration although it has undergone changes due to the process of modernization. City configuration is a reflection of the way of life, the society and the network of its inhabitants [6]. The urban development influenced by various factors such as economic, social, cultural, technological, and natural conditions. A city can be seen as a collection of artifacts built from various eras [6]. Parts of a city which are the most easily detected when there are changes are fringe areas. Nowadays the growth of Yogyakarta City overflowed to the fringe areas namely Kecamatan (Sub-district) Kotagede, a sub-district that borders Bantul Regency. As a conservation area, Kotagede undergoes the rapid growth of Yogyakarta City. The morphology of its residential areas, which was originally strong characterized by organic and traditional settlements, has transformed into mixed use. It is feared that the uniqueness of morphological cultural heritage area will be disappearing. This study aims to explore the factors of morphological changes in Kotagede fringe areas based on a field survey using quantitative approach with rationalistic descriptive method.
