Animal Models of Typical Heterotopic Ossification
[摘要] Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation ofmarrow-containing bone outside of the normal skeleton. Acquired HOfollowing traumatic events is a common and costly clinicalcomplication. In contrast, hereditary HO is rarer, progressive, and life-threatening. Substantial effort has been directed towardsunderstanding the mechanisms underlying HO and finding efficienttreatments. However, one crucial limiting factor has been the lackof relevant animal models. This article reviews the majorcurrently available animal models, summarizes some of the insightsgained from these studies, and discusses the potential futurechallenges and directions in HO research.
