Screening Pesticides for Neuropathogenicity
[摘要] Pesticides are routinely screened in studies that follow specificguidelines for possible neuropathogenicity in laboratory animals. These tests will detect chemicals that are by themselves stronginducers of neuropathogenesis if the tested strain is susceptiblerelative to the time of administration and methodology ofassessment. Organophosphate induced delayed neuropathy (OPIDN) isthe only known human neurodegenerative disease associated withpesticides and the existing study guidelines with hens are astandard for predicting the potential for organophosphates tocause OPIDN. Although recent data have led to the suggestion thatpesticides may be risk factors for Parkinsonism syndrome, thereare no specific protocols to evaluate this syndrome in theexisting study guidelines. Ideally additional animal models forhuman neurodegenerative diseases need to be developed andincorporated into the guidelines to further assure the public thatlimited exposure to pesticides is not a risk factor forneurodegenerative diseases.
