Physiology and Pathophysiology of the SwallowingArea of Human Motor Cortex
[摘要] Swallowing problems can affect as many asone in three patients in the period immediatelyafter stroke. Despite this, in the majority ofcases, recovery usually occurs to a safe levelafter a month or two. In this review, we show.how the organization of the cortical projectionsto swallowing nuscles can account for many ofthe clinical observations on swallowing afterstroke and explain why recovery is common inthe long term. In addition, we examineapproaches that may be useful in speeding uprecovery of swallowing. Swallowing may be auseful model in which to study central nervousreorganization after injury.
