Vision AfterEarly-OnsetLesions of the Occipital Cortex:II. Physiological Studies
[摘要] In one of two patients (MS and FJ) withbilateral, early-onset lesion of the primaryvisual cortex, Kiper et al. (2002) observeda considerable degree of functional recovery. Toclarify the physiological mechanisms involvedin the recovery, we used fMRI and quantitativeEEG to study both patients. The fMRIinvestigations indicated that in both patients, isolated islands of the primary visual cortex arefunctioning, in the right hemisphere in MS andin the left in FJ. The functional recoveryobserved in MS roughly correlated with thefunctional maturation of interhemisphericconnections and might reflect the role of corticocortical connectivity in visual perception. Thefunctionality of interhemispheric connectionswas assessed by analyzing the changes inoccipital inter-hemispheric coherence of EEGsignals (ICoh) evoked by moving gratings. Inthe patient MS, this ICoh response was presentat 7:11 y and was more mature at 9:2 y. In themore visually mpaired patient, FJ, a consistentincrease in ICoh to visual stimuli could not beobtained, possibly because of the later occurrenceof the lesion.
