The concept of cyclone shelters for livestock
[摘要] EveryyearduringtheApril-MayperiodandduringtheSeptember-Decemberperiod,cyclonicsituationssetintotheBayofBengal.Everycyclonetakesitstollofhumanandanimallivesanddamagesprivatepropertyintheformofhousesandhouseholdeffects,andpublicpropertyincludingroads,buildingsandirrigationtanks;manyacresofcropsgetdamagedandthefieldssand-silted.Thelossoflivestockhasseriousconsequencesforthevillagecommunities.Tooffsetthissituation,itisbeingincreasinglyfeltthatthereisaneedtoprovidecommunitycattlesheltersinabout200coastalareas.Itisproposedtoconstructcattle-sheltersinassociationwithfish-ponds.Ofthetenacresacquiredforeachvillage,twoacreswouldbeusedforconstructingthecattleshelterandtheremainingwouldbeusedfortheformationofthefishtank.Itisproposedthattheearthexcavatedfromthesiteoftheproposedfishpondwouldbeusedforraisingaplatformuptoaheightof5to6feet.Theremainingexcavatedearthwouldbeusedforelevatingtheboundsofthecattlesheltertothedesiredlevel.Casurinaandsubabul(Leucaenaleucocephala)treeswouldbeplantedinalternaterowsatadistanceof2mfromplanttoplant.Inbetweentherows,Styloshemata(aperennialleguminousfoddercrop)couldbegrowntoaugmentthefodderneeds.Thisapart,itwouldbedesirabletoprovideacasurinaplantationontheentiresheltersurface,coveringthetankbounds.Thiswouldnotonlyfunctionasawind-break,butalsoprotecttheanimalsinanylikelydeluge.
