[摘要] Totakeadvantageoftheincreasesinproductivitybroughtaboutbydefaunationinruminantsfeddietsrichinsolublesugarsand/oralkali-treatedstraws,asimpleandeconomicalmethodisneededtoremoverumenprotozoa.Thisexperimentaimedtoprovidepreliminarydataastotheefficacyoftropicaltreefoliages,onthebasisoftheirknowncontentofphenolicsubstances,asameansofreducingrumenprotozoalnumbers.Threeweanedcalves(about150kgliveweight)weregrazedonKikuyupastureandreceivedforthreedays,at8am,400g/dayofa50/50mixtureofriceoilpolishingsandsun-driedfoliage(leavesandpecioles;meanNcontentabout3.5%indrymatter)fromeachofthefollowingtrees(Trichanteragigantea,ErythrinapoeppigianaandEnterolobiumciclocarpum).Noneofthefoliagesreducedprotozoalnumbers,whichwererelativelylow(1-2x105/ml)inallanimalsthroughoutthetrial.Thismaypartlyexplainthelackofeffect.
