The use of raw materials cultivated in Mozambique in the feeding of growing chickens
[摘要] Anexperimentwascarriedouttodeterminewhethermaize,sorghum,sesameseeds,cowpeasandsweetpotatoleaves,allproducedinmanyareasofMozambique,could,togetherwithbonemealandsalt,provideasimpledietforgrowingchickens.Thetrialconsistedoffivetreatments:acommercialdietactingascontrol,andfourdietsmadeupoflocalingredients(twowithandtwowithoutvitamin/mineralpremix;thetwowithoutwerefedsweetpotatoleaves);thelastofthesetreatmentswasaquot;freechoicequot;ofthedifferentrawmaterials.Startingateightweeksofage,thesedietswerefedto530chickensconsistingofroughlyequalnumbersofthebreedsNewHampshire,BarredPlymouthRockandthecrossWhiteCornishxNewHampshire,whichactedasreplicates.Theexperimentcontinuedoveraneight-weekperiod.Themainresultwasthatadietformulatedusingtheselocallyavailableingredients,withoutapremixbutreceivinggreenleaves,producedaweightgainthatwasabout20%lowerthanthatattainedbyacommercialdiet,withabout15%inferiorfeedconversion,andasimilarmortality.Thisisdiscussedinthelightoftherelativeunavailabilityofcommercialpoultryfeedinmostruralagriculturalproductionco-operatives.
